Carbon Neutral why and how
Back in 2001 when Hyperware started one of our core principals was to measure our success on what was then known as the triple bottom line.
- Profit
- Community
- Environment
During the last 8 years we have proven that you can run a successful organisation maintaining these principals without any compromise on quality, reliability and service. Paper recycling and separating plastics and metals is something that we do as part of our daily routine. Going Carbon Neutral was always going to be a natural progression for us.
When we decided to go Carbon Neutral we gave ourselves a 12 month window to plan, prepare and execute our strategies. During this time we implemented several internal processes that have seen us realise significant reduction in our power usage and waste. We are now one of the very few IBM & Microsoft business partners working out of Australia that are Certified as Carbon Neutral.
Early on in the process we knew that power consumption was our biggest contributor so we put in a series of measure to reduce this that went beyond our office servers. We don't proclaim to be experts, however from our experiences and from the procedures we have put in place we are well placed to provide you with timely advice. We know that it makes good business sense to go green. Below are some key strategies we have implemented as part of our environmental initiatives.
- Implemented several power saving strategies to reduce the power used in stand-by mode or outside office hours.
- Implemented strategies to reduce power in our data centre as well as office space.
- We have incorporated whole of life cycle environmental considerations into our internal purchasing framework;
- We use virtualisation to reduce the amount of physical servers we need running;
- We have switched to Green Power. 85% of our power is generated from wind farm technology.
- We recently upgraded our office IT hardware including servers, laptops and monitors by sourcing ex-government lease machines. This reduces the amount of new raw materials as well as expanding the lifespan of the equipment;
- As part of our office move we specifically purchased second hand office furniture.
- We encourage our staff to use public transport to commute to and from work and client sites. Currently around half our staff use public transport or walk as their primary means of work-related transport.
